Junior Achievement

The Financial Planning Association® (FPA®) and JA Worldwide® (Junior Achievement) announced a joint effort to advance educational programs that help improve the financial literacy of America’s youth. Recent surveys, such as the one conducted biannually by The Jump$tart Coalition, indicate that young people desperately need financial literacy instruction. Participants in Jump$tart’s 2006 survey averaged a dismal 52.4 percent of questions answered correctly when asked basic questions about financial literacy.

As part of the Junior Achievement/FPA partnership, FPA will provide volunteers from its nationwide network

JA Worldwide is the world's largest organization dedicated to inspiring and preparing young people to succeed in a global economy. Through a dedicated volunteer network, JA Worldwide provides in-school and after-school programs for students in grades K-12. JA Worldwide offers educational programs that focus on three key content areas: entrepreneurship, work readiness, and financial literacy. Today, 140 individual area operations reach approximately four million students in the United States, with an additional 3.5 million students served by operations in 114 other countries worldwide. For more information, visit www.ja.org.

Make A Difference-Wisconsin

Make A Difference - Wisconsin, Inc. (MAD-WI) is a 501(c)(3) "not-for-profit" organization whose mission is to engage members of the business and professional community in the delivery of a 5-hour (6-session) financial literacy curriculum that will empower youth to create financial independence in their lives.  Studies show that America's teens graduate from high school without solid financial management skills. The lure of credit card offers and check-cashing stores, combined with a lack of money management education, sets many up for financial crisis that often last a lifetime.  We want to change that.

The program consists of three seminars focused on budgeting and saving, understanding checking accounts, and understanding credit cards, credit history/scores, and credit reports.  Our goal is reach every 11th grade student in the Milwaukee Public School (MPS) system during the 2006/2007 school year, then expand the program to the Milwaukee metro area in 2007/2008, and state-wide in 2008/2009.

Anyone can teach financial literacy with this program.  Training and all the materials you need are provided.

Wisconsin Money Smart Week
Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle has declared a week in October as Money Smart Week for the entire state. The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago is working with state agencies and local organizations to accomplish this first-ever state-wide campaign.

Money Smart Week is being driven by a diverse group of organizations (banks, credit unions, NML and nonprofit financial literacy providers) working together to promote personal financial literacy. Members agreed to share resources and ideas to achieve greater public awareness of the programs and services available in Wisconsin

The goal for Money Smart Week is focused presentations by community groups, financial institutions, government agencies, educational organizations, and financial experts, all designed to help consumers learn to better manage their personal finances. The effort would showcase different programs, help consumers get information, bring together different organizations - many for the first time, and help these organizations share expertise and leverage limited resources. The presentations will be free.

Topics will include sessions on:
Basic Banking Services
Basic Finance
Budgeting and Saving
Credit
Estate Planning
Financial Planning
Home Buying
Identify Theft
Insurance
Retirement Planning
Small Business Planning
Student Loans

A brochure will be published that will contain the Financial Literacy events planned before, during and after the week in October..  There is a website (www.moneysmartwi.org) sponsored by the DFI that will also contain Financial Literacy events.

There are Money Smart Week programs in Madison, Sheboygan, Milwaukee, Kenosha West Bend, Appleton, Manitowoc, Green Bay, Wausau and Fond du Lac
